New to Cornmarket Centre is the De Calf Cafe offering breakfast weekdays (from 8am) and brunch on Saturdays (8am-12:30pm). Their morning menu is filled with standards and modern classics. Of course, they also serve foods beyond breakfast and brunch, but this post is about the best and most important meal of the day (scroll to the end for complete hours and details).
The interior is bright for an interior cafe without outdoor windows, but the subway tile and large front and corner windows bring the outdoors in.
Let’s take a closer look at the interior, shall we?
Nice use of the Campbell’s Tea tins, yes?
The menus have a nice selection, especially for vegetarians. Though I’m not a vegetarian, I am allergic to pork so almost all breakfast meats will literally land me in the hospital. Seeing so many pig-free menu options made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Of their breakfast/brunch menu items, six are vegetarian and five are meat-loving. A very nice balance!
I treated myself to a hot chocolate because a good hot chocolate feels like a spa day for my taste buds. And I peeked at their counter and saw they have Ghirardelli cocoa! You can see it in the photo above. It was served in a darling enamelware cup.
I opted for the Marinated Avocado with Vine Ripened Tomatoes on Toasted Sourdough with Goats’ Cheese Topped with Two Poached Eggs. It was refreshing, filling, and a combination I wouldn’t have considered but enjoyed. My husband had the Bap with Bacon, Sausages, and Egg, but he ate it before I could take a photo and declared it as good as the butty he would eat daily on our visits to Edinburgh. This is his highest praise.
Of course, beyond the hot menu items, De Calf Cafe offers a wide selection of pastries and baked goods.
Oh yes, and ice cream!
It’s safe to say that De Calf Cafe is a welcome and necessary addition to the Cork breakfast and brunch scene. Seriously, they open at 8am Mondays through Saturdays! This means when my son, LB, wakes me at 7:45am, I can look like the hero to my husband and selflessly get up and sneak LB out to let my husband sleep in peace…but really we’ll be out at De Calf Cafe feasting on American pancakes. Shhh, don’t tell him I’m not really a saint.

Lovely Cafe just discovered it today after a tiring session in TKMAXX. Loved the retro touches of enamel mugs and golden syrup tins for cutlery.
