Cork City Chili Dog

Blue skies coaxed us out today and we went to Sam & Dan’s for a quick bite. New to their menu are chili-covered hot dogs (aka chili dogs) and chili nachos. We ordered two chili dogs and three cinnamon donuts then were delighted to find out there is outdoor seating in the laneway beside the restaurant. The staff there are so friendly and knowledgeable about the ingredients. Three cheers for Kevin, Keith, and Kieran! Here’s a photo of Kevin adding mustard to one of our chili dogs.

Tanora

In my life, I had never heard of Tanora… until I moved to Cork City. I overlooked the bright bottle many a time until a friend recommended it. Tanora is a tangerine-flavored and -colored soda. Evidently, it is the best selling soda in Cork and hard, if not impossible, to find outside Munster.

My first swig of Tanora was one of curious delight. Curious because it reminds me of Triaminic Cold (the orange one) and delight because I like it! I’ll admit that Triaminic Cold and Dimetapp (grape) were always my favorite medicine flavors as a child. Wow, I mean to share how much I like Tanora, but it’s coming out a bit weird. Well, best bet is to just give it a go.

Sam & Dan’s has it in normal serving bottles while Tesco has the two-litre bottles. It’s less than €2 for any bottle of any size that I’ve ever seen.

Sam & Dan’s

The latest Whazon Cork has a coupon for Sam & Dan’s Original Hot Dogs at 14 South Main Street (between Washington Street and Bishop Lucey Park, across from Susan Ryan). Not being into hot dogs, I went with friends only to discover Sam and Dan also make donuts! One bite and I could tell that one of their delicious cinnamon sugar dusted donuts could help satiate my churros cravings. Yummy! Open late it seems too since we went at 23:00 on a Wednesday night.

They are even good reheated (not the case with most American donuts). I had a second donut that went uneaten so I wrapped it in its original bag from Sam & Dan’s then put it in my plate cabinet overnight. The next morning, I heated my convection oven to 140C and warmed it for about five minutes and it was so yummy! Why did I reheat instead of just going back for a fresh one? I was too ashamed to show my face at Sam & Dan’s twice in 12 hours.

UPDATE – I have gone back twice since for the cinnamon-sugar-dusted donut. It was just as delicious as I remembered. This proves they are good and it wasn’t just late-night hunger making them seem good on my first visit. My husband had two hot dogs and gave them two thumbs up. Now he’s looking for Whazon guides to get more coupons! I’ve included a photo of my latest donut feast and one of the menu on the wall of Sam & Dan’s.
