Tasting Summer at Fresco Bistro

You’d think I’d still be full after the last time I went to Fresco Bistro for a tasting of potential dishes for their menu! But with summer coming it was time for more taste testing. This time with Rachael (@glassofwin) who was visiting from Los Angeles, California (whom I was lucky enough to meet through Twitter). We managed to devour about nine courses a couple of weeks ago with LB cheering us on from his stroller. Here’s the bite-by-bite detail on the late lunch that had my full until breakfast the next day!

We started with a seafood cappuccino. It is a cream with a hint of salmon. The frothy topping felt luxurious, especially for a soup. Smoked salmon and mushrooms with chives and a bit of dried red pepper flake for a gentle heat and earthy flavor. Perfection in a cup.

Spicy crab on French toast combined spice and subtle sweetness. The crab itself had a great texture like dried coconut slivers.

Rye pancake with eggs and smoked mackerel. I’m not usually a fan of scrambled eggs but this tasteful and tasty jumble of eggs and smoked fish was delightful.

DSC_0650©

Thin rye pancake with gravlax, chives, and sour cream. Mmmm.

A spicy fried calamari with light raspberry dip. The calamari was PERFECT and not at all over or undercooked. No garden hose here, folks!

Spicy chicken with pineapple alongside a braised cabbage salsa, rice, and papodom.

Pan-seared sea bass with Absolut citrus salsa. I LOVED THIS! Which is why there are SO many photos of it.

We finished with prawn ravioli with shiitake mushrooms and a generous drizzle of prawn bisque.

Lucky LB got to be wheeled home but we enjoyed the walk after that feast. Lucky girls we were! You can see Rachael’s photos of the courses in her Flickr photostream.

A Visit to Cork City

A friend of mine wrote to say she would be visiting Cork City with her family (herself, her husband, her two lovely daughters). Yay! I’ve not seen her in years! Of course, I instantly wanted to tell her about all the great things to do and places to eat so I jotted down my favorites if I was to visit Cork for a couple days in Springtime. This is what resulted. Be forewarned, it is mostly related to places to eat. Big surprise, I know.

Reading in the Afternoon

A great start to the day is a good breakfast. The key is to have one that nourishes you without leaving you in a food coma. Eggs are great for this because of the protein. My two favorite places in City Centre to eat eggs are Fenns Quay and Liberty Grill. Fenns Quay also is one of my favorite places for lunch and dinner.

Breakfast at Fenns Quay makes even a Thursday feel like a holiday. Custom ham, cheese, and tomato omelet

Fenns Quay on Shears (behind and one block west of the Courthouse on Washington) is one of my favorites for food and they have a la carte breakfasts every day (except Sundays) starting at 8:30am. Nice coffee (so says my Seattle-raised hubby). I love their eggs Florentine with Ardsallagh (a local goat cheese). Their hot chocolate is yummmm! They melt real chocolate buttons in it. For lunch, their specials are always good and I adore their chicken in green salad. Their burger is bun-free and one of the most authentic American in terms of the texture of the meat. The head chef is Kate. They are child friendly without being made for kids. Their Hollandaise is Pasteurized. Off the tourist track. Good wine and beer (including 8 Degrees Brewing, I think) selection. Recently nominated for Best Restaurant, Chef and Customer Service for the upcoming RAI regional restaurant awards.

Liberty Grill has very American fare and their breakfasts include many a delicious item. Portions are ample. Queues are commonplace during peak meal times or weekends. Their Hollandaise is Pasteurized.

If your kids need a little chill time amidst a big day of sightseeing or rushing around, pop into the kid’s room at Cork City Central Public Library on Grand Parade. The kid’s room in the front when you first walk in and you can go in and have a little reading session together before heading back out to the city for your next adventure. Free city wifi is strong here. Just accept terms of service (no access to file sharing sites) and it’s free.

For some culture, scenery, and food on the outskirts of the City, check out Fresco Bistro & Eaterie in the Glucksman Gallery on the campus of UCC. Every weekend, there are family/child events (free) at the museum. Fresco Bistro is nice for weekday breakfasts or lunch or for brunch on Saturdays or Sundays. Their flourless chocolate cake is light and sooooo good. The place is run by Brian and Kash. For more about Fresco Bistro, read this blog post I wrote.

Need to take a break to rest your feet, refuel your belly between meals, or to make sure you know what you’re doing next? I recommend stopping into Electric‘s downstairs cafe. They have my favorite bottled gingerbeer (aka ginger ale) as well as coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate, tea, beer, etc… View of River Lee from back seating section. Good natural light. Nice scones and sweets. It is on South Mall near Grand Parade. Free Wifi. Ask at the bar for the password. Of course, if you want a bigger meal, their upstairs has a lovely menu.

For something more active than sitting and eating, climb the belltower of St. Anne’s of Shandon and ring the Shandon Bells.

If you’re in the mood for a picnic and the weather agrees with that idea, why not pick up a few nice sandwiches, salads, and drinks to-go. Top three sources for tasty and affordable picnic sandwiches (excluding any national chains) are:

  • Long Valley, 10 Winthrop St has AMAZING corned beef sandwiches. They also have chicken and beef sandwiches and probably ham, but I only have interest in the corned beef salad sandwich. Trust me, it’s good. And less than a fiver!
  • Wild Ways, 21 Princes Street, Cork City, Telephone: +353 (0)21-4272199
    E-mail: feedback form, Website: http://www.wildways.net
  • The English Market has all the stalls and options to create your own custom picnic. Pay a visit to On the Pig’s Back some cheeses or pate, then get some fresh apples from one of the produce stands, olives from The Olive Stall, fig preserves and goat cheese from Iago, and a loaf of bread from Alternative Bread Company.

I recommend going for your picnic in Bishop Lucey Park (by the central library between Grand Parade/North Main Street/Tuckey Street) or in the slightly farther away but more sprawling Fitzgerald Park, which is about 15 minutes walk from city centre and a great spot for a picnic on a nice day. There is a little cafe there with Cornettos and soda but not much for real food. A museum there too.

Fota Wildlife Park is great for kids of all ages. Ideal for cloudy days or sunny ones. Check out the cheetah run and stroll among the animals. The staff know so much and are always willing to share facts, tid bits and history. I particularly love hearing about their Bald Eagles.

For science buffs or rainy days, I recommend a visit to Blackrock Castle Observatory. There is even the option for a tasty meal at Castle Cafe which has really nice menu options (not too pricey). Free parking at Blackrock Castle around the corner by the water.

If you want to do a little shopping, there are all the usual shops plus my favorites for women’s apparel: Amity and Store. Those are the shops to visit if you don’t want to dress like everyone else. Also The Dressing Room but they are pricier than the other two I’ve mentioned and much more suited to a professional wardrobe. Chain stores are easily found on Patrick’s Street and Opera Lane (list of stores and hours here).

Fall Into Opera Lane

But perhaps I’ll do shopping in a separate post since you’ll have plenty to do in a weekend visit to Cork as it is. And if you’re into knitting or sewing, definitely check out some of the city’s wool and knitting shops (there’s a list here) and the Cork Button Factory.

Oh, and if you get sick and need a prescription at an odd hour when you’re in Cork there is a late-night pharmacy on Patrick’s Street and Irwin’s Late-Night Pharmacy is on Shandon near North Gate Bridge.

Fresco Bistro & Eaterie is Keeping It Real at the Glucksman Gallery

It all started with a recommendation by Greg Higgins in response to my post listing spots serving Brunch in Cork City. He Tweeted: @FreckledPast You should add Fresco’s in @glucksman (‘s) basement to that list.”

Fresco’s? The name rang a tiny bell in the back of my brain, dust stirred. You know when you miss a television show or a popular band when it first hits the airwaves then find the box set at the library and feel like you’ve just discovered a new joy in life? Well, it turns out that can happen with restaurants too! The name was familiar because I had seen a video by Neil Danton of an editorial photoshoot he did at Fresco a few months back. After a few Tweets back and forth between me and Greg, mentioning Fresco Bistro & Eaterie, it became clear that a visit was necessary. Fresco’s culinary imagination and business brains are Kash and Brian. When they heard I hadn’t experienced the joys of the Fresco Bistro menu, they invited me out to tour their menu. It took two visits to work my way through their most popular dishes but I can honestly say that all 13 courses were completely enjoyable.

Brian and Kash

Before I move on to talk about the food, I want to tell you a few other things that I found to be pleasant surprises.

  • The prices are reasonable. Lunch for under a tenner? There is even a deal for students to have a full Irish Breakfast Monday through Friday for €5.
  • Throughout their opening hours, you can pop in just for a cup of coffee to go. An ideal afternoon perk-up, especially if you’re not partial to the Starbucks served at the main coffee shop on campus.
  • Their produce is sourced locally with an exclusive relationship with Convent Farms in County Cork. This is where their passion truly is. Fresh local ingredients.
  • Though the restrooms are on the level below (accessible by stairs), there is a changing room and handicapped restroom on the same level as the Bistro.
  • It’s on the #8 and #5 bus lines. So you can hop on the bus from city centre or Wilton or wherever and be whisked away to the Glucksman for lunch. Sounds so nice when you tell your friends, doesn’t it? “Oh, just popped into this great little bistro at the Glucksman Gallery for lunch.”
  • Fresco doesn’t have a kid’s menu. They believe children have the right to eat good food just like the rest of us so children can opt for a half-portion of any of their menu items. This is something Kash said he’d love to see all restaurants do (this was actually discussed at a TweetMeetTues a while back).
  • Their menu is in the top three best foods I’ve ever eaten in a museum. The other two? The cafés in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Crawford Gallery in Cork City.

Fresco Bistro has a modern design with timeless calm. You can go in, eat your meal, and enjoy some peace. Whether your day is filled with classes to teach, lessons to learn, paperwork to shuffle, or babies to nurture, you can enjoy an affordable meal made with care using local ingredients. Kash has cooked for the celebrity appetites of Bono, Van Morrison and Eddie Ervine and knows how to cook for us ordinary folks as well. Maybe we’re easier because we don’t wear sunglasses indoors?

Arriving at any museum with a baby in-buggy can be intimidating. This is the home of artwork and I have a tiny person who smiles at light fixtures. But my son is content and fairly quiet so I forged ahead with pretend confidence. Turns out that was not necessary since The Glucksman Gallery and Fresco Bistro love children. The Gallery hosts family activities and other events! I stepped into the  oversized and industrial lift, feeling felt like I was heading to some hip underground soiree in a New York City loft. You know, with my infant son, big buggy and oversized diaper bag. What about that doesn’t just scream hip?! The ground level is where Fresco Bistro is located. An expanse of windows along its outer wall face a small field of grass that must look like a meadow to a child. The dining space is fairly intimate and stark in design. That is just one reminder that you’re in a house of art.

I have to tell you about the chairs! They are the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat in at a restaurant. They’re made of some kind of rubberized foam so your posterior is not met with a hard surface but one with just a tiny bit of give. I sat there for three hours and never had to shift my weight once! It may seem like a small thing to make me so happy but give these chairs a try and you will go away thinking, “I forgot to look at the chair that girl wrote about” because it isn’t that you are swallowed by them in comfort so much as you are not injured by them after a lengthy sit. Wish I had taken a picture of one.

Ok, now let’s relive my meals!

When I was there for Sunday brunch, the chalkboard of specials had these appetizing options:

The regular brunch menu lists many classics but also some unexpected delights:

When I lunched there, I was astounded by the selection. In my university days, I dreamed of such a place existing on campus and here UCC has a place with delectable food, locally-sourced ingredients, and invigorating natural light. Lucky! So, about that food. The specials that day were:

The Thai beef salad is delicately dressed with the natural flavors of the steak and gently grilled flavor coming through. Perfect thickness too. A taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:

A pleasant surprise was the teriyaki of duck salad which had that enchanting balance of sweetness (papaya), savory (salad), crunchy (pecans), and tender (duck). I’m in love with their house-made candied pecans. Mmm, pecans. A taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:

I then enjoyed the lamb harira soup. It is the traditional Berber soup of Morocco and one associated with being nourishing. Each spoonful of soup was infused with natural coriander flavors and the melt-in-your-mouth lamb was so tender. This dish was so good, I forgot to take a photo.

The teriyaki of salmon salad is a fresh and healthy dish. Excellent textures and flavors. Very light salad dressing. A taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:

Then I enjoyed their Cajun pasta with spinach. It was creamy with a nice kick. Sweet and spicy are in harmony with the charming sweetness of tomatoes. No photo as it was eaten too quickly.

Next was the Fresco curry with rice and poppadom. The poppadom is the only item on their menu they do not make themselves! The sauce itself was perfectly sweet and spicy as a combination and the chicken was tender and not overcooked. A taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:
Fresco Bistro

And because six hearty taster courses just wasn’t enough, Brian and Kash wanted me to try their fresh Aki tuna salad. Now, this isn’t at all like the tuna salad I make at home. No, theirs is a fresh Aki tuna seared and served atop a bed of greens with a very light dressing on the salad and keeping the lettuce company are little potato bites and a hard-cooked egg. Neil Danton took an amazing photo of the full-size portion of thisA taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:

To complete the decadent and taste bud-pleasing afternoon, I enjoyed a small portion of their flourless chocolate cake. This is made with Callebaut! I cannot say enough good things about this dessert. The flavor is strong but the texture is light, making for a perfect combination as to not overwhelm the stomach but pleasing the senses. A taster portion is pictured below, the usual size would be larger if ordering off the menu:

For anyone visiting UCC, this is a must! For anyone wanting to get out of the city centre but still within walking distance for lunch, this is the place. Come, eat, and enjoy the locally-grown produce, innovative cuisine, and beautiful Glucksman Gallery.

If you want to see more [by that I mean if you want to see some mouth-watering professional] photos of Fresco Bistro and their food, check out this video of Neil Danton’s editorial photography. Neil is a whiz with the camera and I think his appetite for good food comes through in his food photography.

Brunch in Cork City

Brunch, part breakfast part lunch, all delicious. Much like cupcakes, Ireland has caught on to an American food trend and made it their own. The mid-morning to mid-day weekend meal is no different and Cork City has embraced it. Brunch can be for friends to catch up after a busy week or a time for family to gather, especially for holidays like Mother’s Day (March 18th this year), Father’s Day, Easter, Jazz Festival weekend or some such special occasion.

Eggs Florentine at @fennsquay for breakfast.

Here is a list of places I know of that offer weekend breakfasts and brunches that are worth a visit. I link to their brunch or weekend morning menus whenever possible.
PLEASE NOTE: This post only lists the weekend hours. These establishments also have weekday hours which you can learn about by clicking on the restaurant name to visit their website.
