Entering Market 57, a colorful shop on Bridge Street in downtown Westport, County Mayo, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Cheery-hued silicone cooking gadgets, jars of delectable jams and chutneys, candy along the under-counter shelves, and colorful tins of who-knows-what sit dutifully on their shelves awaiting hungry customers with a penchant for culinary flare.
Methodically making my way through the aisles from left to right, front to back, my focus was singularly on the item caught in my gaze at any given moment. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (three-pack), fudge, sweets, cranberry-port sauce, eye-catching tins of hot chocolate mix, bottles of fine yet approachable wines – and that’s just the front of the store!
Beside the register is a large display of Irish honey, jams, and preserves then two refrigerators boasting a selection of lovable cheeses and chilled beverages. Venture further back and you are enveloped by a colorful array of kitchen do-hickies. Basters, poachers, blackbird pie funnels, mashers, kitchen scales, baker’s supplies, and spatulas! A selection of classic white china in not-so-classic shapes lines the wall on shelves. Seashell plates, muffin liner cups, and avocado bowls topped my list of most desired. Sale shelves in the back temp those of us with arm space still remaining. The wall of hanging odds and ends had me in awe. Two of the items that caught my eye first were the banana guards and the pop-up thermometers for roast turkey. Perfect timing for your bird with a simple plastic gadget. Canning supplies are also available.
As an American and foodie, among my favorite food items were, obviously, the marshmallow fluff and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. As a child, I ate fluffernutters regularly for my packed school lunch so seeing Fluff always brings back happy memories. Sometimes, my Mom would even cut the sandwich into a shape, so for thoughtful parents Market 57 also has a nice cookie cutter selection for sale. Though these two items are not in their online shop, they do sell them and they are priced at €3.99 and €1.40 respectively in the shop on Bridge Street. For other American foodies, you’ll be happy to know they stock Jelly Belly in three flavors, celery salt, aforementioned marshmallow fluff, pop-up turkey timers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, dried cranberries, and much more!
All this and they ship! Oh yes, you may know Market 57 as KitchenCookware.ie online. Shipping within Ireland is just €4.95, which at such a reasonable cost will be my downfall I tell you now! Of course, orders over €50 come with free shipping. Sigh. Swoon.
